Afforable Style

Our friends at Interior Illusions just opened a new concept store in downtown Los Angeles called isquared.  Here you'll find chic, urban and modern furniture and accessories all at affordable price points.  At last we have an alternative to West Elm and Crate and Barrel!

Pick of the Week

We love these library wall lamps because they are both stylish and functional.  We came across these images on a post by one of our favorite blogs, remodelista.  These images showcase the versatility of the lamp, as it can easily go from the kitchen to a bedroom.

Pick of the Week

We can't get enough of this well designed desk!  We love the white laquer finish with macassar ebony wood faces, chrome hardware with an X shaped base.  Great for small spaces and beautiful enough to be used in a family room with a cool upholstered chair.  It's a nice transitional piece that will look great in either a modern or traditional house.

Books That Inspire

Kelly Wearstler is a modern icon in the world of Interior Design.  Earlier this decade she was a pivotal individual for re-creating a modern look combined with English Regency influences.  With her new book Hue,  she now has once again reinvented herself with the styles found in this book.  This is a collaboration of elements from the 1920's through the 1980's.

Hue by Kelly Wearstler builds upon the success of her first monograph, Modern Glamour, and includes recent, unpublished projects, including her home in Beverly Hills, celebrity residential projects as well as some of her latest hotel projects.  The book is filled with Keith Haring-esque custom wallpapers, fashion inspired finishes, and luxury custom carpets.

This book gives us great inspiration for color pallets, beautiful custom carpet designs, and custom wood cabinet details and finishes.  It’s fun to look at a space in awe and feel your jaw drop whether the decor is your style or not.

 

 

Holiday Decorating

The holidays are just around the corner and it's time to decorate!  In the past few years we have worked with our existing clients to help them create beautiful, understated holiday looks in their homes.  This year we are providing this service for local residence.  Feel free to contact our office for further details.

Fall Decor

Here are some ideas for an inexpensive way to bring autumn colors into your home without breaking the bank.

Seen below, we've used an antique clamshell and stone lotus dish that we found at a local antique store.  As you can see, we've added small pumpkins and squash in this antique clamshell that can be placed either on an entry table or could be a beautiful centerpiece in your dining room.  We've also added fall vegetables to the lotus dish making it a perfect accessory to a guest room or a powder bathroom.

Also seen here is a piece of art that Ryan's daughter, Chloe (age 3), made in school.  It's a great piece with beautiful autumn colors.  You can have your children make art and frame them to create a personal statement to your home this fall.

Incorporating Pattern

Due to the large number of inquiries we receive, we are going to start posting some of the most commonly received questions on our blog. 

Reader Question: "My room has no pattern and I'm afraid that if I add patterns, I'll get tired of them too quickly."

Brown Design Solution: A great way to add pattern to a room is to find fabrics that have a similar tones of color in the pattern.  This adds subtle pattern without being overwhelming.  Sticking with neutrals is great when you don't want to commit to a certain color scheme.  You can always add to a neutral base with accent items that bring your color in without the commitment.  And the best part is that your room becomes interchangeable without having to redesign every time--accents can go a long way in changing the mood of your room.

Here is a great rug with a beautiful subtle pattern which really grounds the space.  You can pick up these same colors with an accent pattern in your throw pillows as well. 

 

Here is another example of how we picked up the same tones found in the chair to select fabric for the accent pillow and throw. 

 

Herringbone Wood Floors

One of our favorite patterns of hardwood floor is the classic herringbone.  Seen here is a traditional style where the application has a clear coat finish. 

In the photo below, the floors were painted in contrasting blue and white stripes in the same herringbone pattern.  It gives a fresh and modern look to this classic style.
